The point is not to protest against the use of EdTech. You need to create a balance between how much technology you want and how much traditional teaching methods you will use. ## Tech Use According to Need The problem with technology in school now is that many tools are being introduced without a solid vision for what they must be used for. For example, a school will need a subscription to a dedicated AI checker. Many detectors come with a fact checker and a plagiarism detector. If the school, without knowing that the AI detector has other functions, ends up buying a subscription to a plagiarism checker, then it would be a waste of resources. This is why it is important for teachers to tell the administration when there is an edtech being used that is not required. Instead, let the need lead to the technology that would be used. For example, if there are too many papers to be graded, and that takes a lot of time, teachers can appeal for a tool that is used for auto-grading. Just because a new edtech tool is trending or an application now has an upgraded version, it does not mean it needs to be used. If there is a need for a tool, only then should it be introduced to the classroom. ## Using Traditional Methods For Engagement The current generation of students has a very short attention span. This is why more and more tools are cropping up to make sure their attention stays trained on the class. However, for a generation that is so easily distracted, the solution is not more tools. Before gamification tools, teachers were playing educational dumb charades and whiteboard quizzes. Youth these days get tired of one game quickly and switch to the next without much thought. No matter which gamification app you use, the students will eventually get bored and forget about it. This is why what works better is the traditional methods of teaching, where being present, holding eye contact, and your natural tone of voice filled with enthusiasm and wonder for learning work better at keeping students engaged. Here is where teachers get the opportunity to get creative. Think various types of board work and the incorporation of storytelling. Your own lived experience and funny anecdotes can work as a great engagement tool and wholesome enrichment for your lesson. Also, remember that traditional methods can help build mental stamina and resilience, something students are losing more and more every day. Bright colors of tools can cause more trouble, as they can be unnecessarily distracting, taking away focus from the lessons. ## Say No to Technology Sometimes Not every lesson or lecture needs technology. If a tech is available for use, it doesn’t mean you always have to use it. The students are using their devices 24/7; this is why having a break from technology can be a good thing. There are some topics that need silence and focus. If the topic is serious or the concept is complicated, instead of crowding the display, it is better to just listen quietly and let the ideas sink in. In many cases, technology can reduce attention span, instead of helping the cause. Effective listening and uninterrupted thinking can help understand and internalize information. While digital systems have become a general expectation among regular people, choose to be bold and say no to screens. Do this for subjects that benefit from the quiet and lack of chaos. Since this gives the students the much-needed break from screens, it can help curb their addiction to tech. ## Use Tech For Repetitive Tasks The very first technology on earth was built on one specific concept: to get a job done faster than it takes to do manually. While there have been vast leaps in technology in the thousand years that have passed since, this concept is still important. For teachers, what takes away a lot of their time is not the teaching itself, but the hours they spend toiling away at administrative tasks. However, if digitization and AI can reduce the time needed to do those menial tasks, it will leave more time for creativity and meaningful interactions. If the assignment management, like assigning and tracking, auto-grading tools, and digitized quizzing with instant feedback, can reduce the time and effort spent on less important tasks. Educators will get more time to become innovative with teaching and connecting effectively with students. ## Reduce the Overstimulation The amount of Edtech used in school keeps increasing. It started off with a platform that takes in submissions and keeps a track of things…and now we have AI tutors that can answer your questions 24/7 and apps that make math feel like a game. With an endless array of tech cropping up every day, the students who are continually switching from one app to the next are getting continuously overstimulated. Due to this, the use of technology in school needs to be reduced. Even if you cannot avoid using technology, it is crucial to reduce it to only the tools that you cannot do without. Overstimulation can aggravate the already growing social and psychological issues that students are facing. This can also hamper learning, because students need a calm environment to internalize the concepts. This is why teachers must ensure they reduce this overstimulation. ## Reaching Equilibrium This is something that many teachers are having to do anyway, like showing a slide during a lecture. However, there are ways to enhance this and make it more effective. For example, a teacher might start a history lesson, introduce a certain person or event that took place, and then take them on a VR tour to the location where the person once lived or where the historical lessons took place. Most people are visual learners, which is why visual aid tech can help students get a more solid idea of the topic. However, it is the teacher who would work as a guide, making the class an immersive experience. This is the most logical step to take to bring balance between tech and tradition. However, the key is to know that the technology will only take the students so far; it is the teacher who can bring the lesson to life. ## Final Thoughts Now that you know how to balance technology with traditional teaching, as an educator, you can become more effective while staying efficient. With more and more Edtech available in the market, most schools are drowning their teachers and students with this latest technology. As an educator, it is your job to choose which tech should stay and which are becoming more of a bother, saving both time and money on behalf of the school, which can be better spent elsewhere. So, reduce students’ overstimulation, and choose the tech that helps reduce your time doing administrative tasks, leaving you more time to invest in the students and teaching innovations.
